What is the situation outside Israel?

​​ Cent Elles Project in Geneva

Geneva has been operating for several years, at the initiative of a civil society organization and in partnership with the municipality, a venture called Cent Elles (in free translation "One Hundred Them"). 

As part of the project, the names of 100 streets in Geneva, named after men or gender-neutral, will be changed to female names.

About 20 streets have already been replaced, the next 20 have been decided upon, and in the coming years the rest will be replaced.

We had a long meeting with the person in charge of the project in the municipality of Geneva, where we heard in detail about the project, from the strategic level to critical tips for proper progress, and we will continue to be in touch with it.

Aspern Seestadt district in Vienna

• The data on gender fairness in street names in Vienna is not better than the situation in Israel, with a 11-fold preference for commemorating men over commemorating women. A chart reflecting the situation can be seen on the GenderAtlas.at website.

• The Vienna Municipality has a Department for Women's Affairs , and our initiative is in touch with it.

• Recently a new district was built in Vienna - Aspern Seestadt, under the heading "Feminine district". As part of the strategy developed by the Vienna Institute for Social Documentation and Methodology (WISDOM), the names of the streets in the district were selected in a collaborative process supported by 30 experts from different academic fields. The names were of women worthy of commemoration, from six different spheres of life. Here is the list of women who will be commemorated on the streets of the district .
